History explains why: everything must be considered with the times. Ancient historians are always working with an imperfect record. 1200 bce the great bronze age collapse. Could not make bronze so they made iron. Iron is better for making weapons and tools. 10th stagnation occurs: high point in isolation. Late 10th and 9th beginnings of growth : population increased, growth in communication. Greek renaissance of the 8th: growth development, second period of state-formation, the type of state changes radically in this time period, divided into larger territorial states, greece was never one unified country until recently. Rival states: everywhere spoke greek but the dialects would differ, beginning of pan hellenism. Competition between the states: myth and religion are central to state and identity formation, panhellenic poetry. The phonetic alphabet was created: no palaces. Circa 750 bce: sanctuaries, 750 700 bce first 100" temples made. Circa 700 bce: building of temples and votives as a way to save money for graves.
