1870 s- german archaeologist named heinrich schliemann found the palace and city of. Mycenae (later found were tiryns, pylos, and thebes) we call the civilization of bronze age greece in general mycenaean after his discovery in 1899 a british archaeologist named arthur evans discovered the palace of knossos on. Crete he called the cretan civilization that had built these palaces the minoan civilization ( after minos, a mythical cretan king) Society controlled by a government and ruling class. As societies grow, they become more differentiated and complex. Adaptation to complexity by centralization and stratification- state formation. Centralization leading to a state, extracting surplus resources and monopolizing public decision making. Stratification: social hierarchy, with socio-economic elite becoming a ruling class, controlling the state. Palaces built in knossos, phalitos, mallia, and zakro b/w 2000-1900. Palace states reached their height b/w 1700-1500 bce. Aegean power kingdom og pylos- 1200 the wanax, at the head of a hierarchy of palace officials.
