Europeans began to explore the atlantic world (africa & the americas) in the early 15th century. Portugal and spain were leaders in exploration, but by the late 15th and early 116th centuries, English and french explorers were exploring the north american coast. Historians consider that the renaissance period set the stage for european exploration. The new learning associated with the renaissance contributed to growing interest in the world outside europe. The development of printing made books easily available and cheap, many captains would publish accounts of their travels. By the early 16th century, more people were increasingly informed about travels outside. Growing trade was another important factor and merchants and others looked for new trading partners, new goods and more efficient trading routes. The new techniques were a result of mixing local approaches with those originating in to the arabic world. These improvements included things like new ship design.
