With the discussion of the republican regime of florence and venice, the theocratic governance of papal rome or more traditional courtly rule in other areas of italy. Governance was one of the most important preoccupations of renaissance humanists. Order and justice provide most important vocabulary for early modern governance. An orderly state was one that was peaceful, prosperous and devout. Disorderly society was the inversion - lack of governance, austerity, godlessness, violence. But violence was still a reality of life in renaissance italy. Concern for stopping violence was a preoccupation of those in power. It was partly in response to the level of violence that rhs wrote treatises for rulers and city elites started to develop models of virtuous leadership.
