Important social reform movements of the late 19th and early 20th century: fight for women"s rights and suffrage movement. Social reform: victorian era was a period of transformation, economic changes = broader political, social and cultural change. Established to provide lodging and job training for single women who were arriving to urban centres to join industrial workforce. Offered women a warm, christian atmosphere in which they could supposedly be insulated from the dangers of the new urban environments. Ideas and goals of suffragists changed over time. The story of suffrage: not simply a story of progress, movement included gains and losses, inclusions and exclusions, depended on where the women were situation in the nation.
