Lecture 16: Informal Care Profile of Caregivers in Canada -more than 6 million people - 35% of the workforce - provide unpaid, informal care while balancing job responsibilities -most employed caregivers spend 9 hours or less per week caring, but many (24%) spend up to 30 hours; some even more -the recipients of care are primarily seniors and caregivers are most often between the ages of 45 and 64 -women more likely than men to provide care - 54% of women are caregivers -over one-quarter of caregivers sandwiched between caregiving and childrearing -stress of caring for aging or ill family members takes its toll on Canadians Sources of Informal Support -spousal support -parent - “adult child” ties -caring for elderly parents -women have more active ties - kin keepers are typically daughters -unmarried daughters take over care for parents -wife’s parents are more typically cared for -widow with no children would rely on friends, siblings, younger relatives -pets for elderly people -church (religious) -neighbours -technology (lifeline) Informal Caregiving Implications -financial -may have to quit job -interferes with job promotion -intensive caregivers less likely to have a paid job -work fewer hours -health -caregiver “burnout” or “burden” -psychological effects -physical impacts -wear and tear effect over time -the caregiving effect -family -less time for immediate family; impacts leisure activities -effect relationship with spouse (more responsibility falls on spouse) -gender: women spend more hours giving care
