Document Summary
Dying: when does dying begin? - unclear and depends on one"s point of view. Death: cessation of cardiac and respiratory function and/or cessation of brain function; dif cult assessment. Social death: refers to the perception or behaviour of others that indicates that they perceive or treat a person as if physically dead when in fact the physical body has not yet die. Affects how we treat them, can hear us talking about them. Death used to be common among all age groups. Longer life expectancy today means that most people die of diseases of old age (= fear and anxiety about old age) Dying trajectories are much longer now (pattern or course of dying over time, ex. sudden or slow decline) Death in later life often comes slowly and predictably. Graph: 7 leading causes of death at age 65 or older. Cancer, heart diseases, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases, alzheimer"s disease, diabetes, in uenza and pneumonia.
