Feminist critique of traditional or mainstream health & aging. Research: it is androcentric (e. g. , men are treated as the norm, while women, it is overly focused on the biology of people"s bodies (e. g. , it relies on dualist ways of thinking, it is ageist. The name of an approach that is used to address (and repair) neglect of the study of aging women in both gerontology and feminism. Traditional approaches to the study of gender (calasanti & slevin: conceptualize gender as a static or fixed category, ignore that gender is embedded in social arrangements. Gender as a variable: involves adding gender into a project as a demographic, descriptive, or control variable, does little to advance theoretical development about gender, does not assess the causes or origins of differences that are found to. For women only: treats gender as being relevant only for women, implies that women are the only sex that has gender or is shaped.
