HLTHAGE 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hegemonic Masculinity, Postpartum Depression, Masculinity
Document Summary
What connects the lectures, topics, links from one lecture to another. These two gender identities dominate/ overshadow in society: Gender= something one does (develop), sex something one has (biological) Hegemonic masculinity- so dominant it is unquestioned, (e. g. - at earth theory was hegemony), emphasis on stereotypical manliness- independence, toughness: some emotions (anger, aggression) prioritized over others (sadness, fear). Emphasized femininity- compliance w/ subordination to men, accommodating needs/ desires of men. Multiple masculinities and femininities- dominant forms subordinate other expressions e. g. - heterosexuality are held as superior to inferior sexualities , such as homosexuality. Sources of difference: real differences in wellbeing and psychopathology based on physiological differences, pms, post-partum depression to aspd, assumptions linked to hormones. Empathy, cooperation, nurturing as products of female sex hormones. Rational and spatial understanding, competitive behaviour, violence as a result of male sex hormones: real differences based on social conditions, real differences based on socialization, false differences based on research/ diagnostic bias.
