Lecture 12: disability, chronic illness, and the internet________________________________________ Internet allows us to ability to shop from a distance, telecommute, skype into class, visit libraries from home. = we are simultaneously in two places at once. = and it"s a new thing that didn"t happen in the past. Creators of internet envisioned it as accessible, freely available online community. = seemed to promise regardless of status or impairment the ability to connect to one another. Hailed as revolutionary for individuals w/impairment and chronic illness. but not inherently good or bad. Despite change, accessibility has remained an ongoing struggle. = easier to do things in the virtual world. Online identities decouple us from the constraints of the body= representation of our body online but not the real thing. = control how we are presented & disconnect between body & self is further separated: can hide or lessen the impact of disability. = can decide how and when to engage.
