Environment affects us psychologically, emotionally, and physically = we have an immune system to protect against illness but stress also alters our immune system. The nervous system and immune system communicate with each other so that the social environment can influence biological responses through its input to the nervous system. Biological pathways through which social factors affect health. Research = social support and stress interrelated i. e. hostile marriage decreased levels of health protecting hormones and increased levels of those that lead to illness. Bad marriages worse for women than for men. Conclusion = acceptance that ses and social gradient related to health and growing recognition that this operates through an interconnectedness of social, psychological and physiological factors. Approach deals with mind, body, soul, body intrusion i. e. non western view of holistic medicine. Study of emotions and their role in our health. Emotions bridge mind and body, nature and culture, biology and sociology.
