Health lecture: identity, health, and marginality (nov 18/2015) Health status as a result of three broad factors: Structural relates to broad social factors beyond an individuals control, like racism, poverty, sexism, working conditions etc. Lifestyle and biology are signi cantly in uences by structural factors. Structural factors, being of central importance to health, result in tremendous health inequalities. It is heavily tied with the overarching structural forces- it contributes both to how we behave and how others treat us. Although we experience it as an indvidiual, our identities also carry social meaning. > race, social class, ethnicity, health status etc. Social structures poise unequal health risks for some individuals more so than others. Ex: women more likely to experience domestic violence than men. How we experience and respond to health problems. Refers to persons position within a society economy. When measured, people often include income, education and occupation.
