Mental health disorders is primarily a result because of a disturbance between three
parts of personality, the id, the ego and the superego
Id — animalistic — sex and aggression
Ego — mediates between the two
Superego — The opposite of the id — the social aspect; society voice, guiding
our behaviour
While the ID wants to sleep with everyone, and the superego is constantly
contradicting this
Mental health concerns begin in childhood
Sometimes called psychoanalytic/psychdynamic theory
Essentially, the ego is trying to negotiate between the id and superego and doesn’t
work
Anxiety when one or the other is becoming to powerful
To do something about that, we repress things (defensive mechanism)
These processes are unconscious in nature — for psychoanlaytsics, you are trying to
bring them to the surface
Talking helps — talk therapy
When asylums fill up, its not really possible to do so
3-5 hours a week, for 1hr a day — regular psychoanalytic theory
How applicable is this?
Young, upper middle class, Jewish women where way Freud came to these
conclusions
His cliental basis was not representative of the gen pop
The sorts of problems facing these upper mid class women — he might have
overemphasized problems that they are only dealing with
One of the things they were dealing with obsessions, phobias etc
Psychoanalytic Movement
Took psychiatrists out of the asylum and onto couch
Psychiatry maintain private oces
Shift away from institutions
Widened meaning of mental illness
Freud studied a lot of neurosis — and medicalized delusions, and hallucinations
People who are anxious, people who have compulsions, are becoming
medicalized
Huge new segments are called mentally ill and are treated for mental illness
Psychoanalysis isn’t cheap
Preserves the wealthy
The face of psychiatry — Freud’s ideas have stuck with us
Is this the beginning of the stagnation of science?
Psychology is hard to test, and rests mostly on interpretation
People on the biological side, vilify Freud
Pre- WWII Climate
