Lecture #5 gender, sexuality and mental health. Is mental illness naturally occurring or actually the result of gender dynamics of society. Is it intrinsic or is it brought by broader social structures. Complicated and subjected to all kinds of different debates; different specialities have their own opinions and perceptions. Gender is something that one does; sex is something that you have. Gender has to do with the way you behave (i. e gender roles); sex is something we have a uterus, or testes. Gender is fluid sex can be considered a dichotomy. If you imagine a hierarchy hegemonic masculinity aggression, competitiveness, independence, rationality and avoiding vulnerability. Some emotions are prioritized over others (aggression, anger vs sadness, fear) Works to promote and advance the interests of men not all men, but this type of concept of a man. Its not that there isn"t a female equivalent but there is a feminine norm emphasized femininity.
