Revived by islamic scholars (al-razi, lbn sina), treatment wards for mad individuals found across muslim world. notion that people behaving abnormally are different than others & benefit to alleviating the difference. In christian europe (medieval period), some cited spiritual basis for madness, others argued for imbalance of humours (biological). = chosen by god or punished by god. Is it intrinsic to the body or extrinsic to the body.
