This is the conclusion over some long-term trends. If 20th c. was the century of the psy-ences then the 21st c. marks culmination of the growth of psy. Concerned with people who were behaving in a way that was less than ideal/normal. Move from focusing just on negative states and deficiencies to enhancement. Rather than creating more conditions, the psy disciplines start looking at people"s strengths. Increasingly, daily discipline and governance over psychological life comes from the self rather than experts. We surveille own self most of the time. So experts play a little less of an important role. Martin seligman"s epiphany in the garden in the 1990s. His daughter (5 years old) asked him why he was so grumpy. He needed to apply an understanding of his daughter"s strengths to raising her.
