Lecture 8: mental health across the lifespan - march 12. Our concept of mh is drawn from adults between 21-45 (middle aged) So the behaviours we expect people to preform are based on this age. There are some specific differences when it comes to criteria for childhood, but tricky these are periods of immense change. Realize that these are t(cid:449)o (cid:448)ery i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)t periods of (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ge (cid:373)assi(cid:448)e shifts i(cid:374) ide(cid:374)tity: childhood and adolescence. Both children and older adults are described as facing unique challenges related to mental health. Invention of childhood: there was a shift towards defining childhood in a concrete way, start talking about childhood as a discrete portion of childhood 19th century. Our ideas of what it means to be a proper and healthy childhood changes: developmental psychology interest, benchmarks of child development.
