HLTHAGE 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Asylum Records, Drapetomania, Institutional Racism
Document Summary
Lecture 6 race, ethnicity, and mental health. Focus on things that tie in multiple lectures (5-6 big themes) Mcq and long answer, likely 2/3 of weight on long answer. Etc: race is not biologically meaningful or scientific. No such thing as a pure race, nor are there pure people. Race not something that can be measured- it is a category assigned by others. But race is still meaningful real in that society treats it as such: race is constructed in a relational sense, privileging some and degrading others, lived experience of race is entirely real. On the whole, western psychology and psychiatry are structured along lines that reflect our society"s privileging of certain notions: individual as self-centered, self-conscious. Reflects focus on reductionism: mental health understood as individual variable, rather than something tied into broader social surroundings, individuals who define their wellbeing in other terms collectively, community-focused do not necessarily fit into this system.
