Housing estate term used to describe massive housing initiatives 50s-70s to house people mostly impoverished. Have become infamous for pretty severe social problems. Over two years, researchers improved lighting, put up small fences for gardens, closed alleys, conducted landscape initiatives. Increased trust, increased optimism, hope for the future, neighbourhood identification. Recall the debate between dimensional (distress) vs. categorical (disorder) model. Broader debates about whether mental health (and illness) is derived from social environment or personal factors. Happiness, security, sense of control over destiny: functioning well (inherently social) Social support a protective factor in mental health. When a persons community or social network offers instrumental support (useful material, info) or expressive support (sharing love, venting frustrations, etc. ) Both the physical environment (in a concrete sense) and theorized place, connected to the meaning that we ascribe to an area: may not have clear boundaries (e. g. neighbourhood ) Space/place particularly important when thinking beyond strict notion of mental health as an individual concern.
