Keane: sex addiction differs because unlike other addictions the treatment isn"t necessarily abstinence, but rather, engaging in the behaviour in a healthy way. Sex that deviates from natural, loving, monogamous" sex is framed as pathological. Addictive sex is defined by the relationship between partners - addicts objectify and exploit their partner, rather than cherish them and love them as part of the sex. Reasons for having sex become dichotomized: good sex is about the creation and maintenance of a loving relationship but addictive sex is about pleasure & boosting self esteem. Sex addiction differs from substance addiction by the concept of predictability. Many believe substances are a kind of monotony that develops as a person becomes addicted. Use the same substance every day at the same place, same time. In contrast, an increasing variety of sexual activity is a symptom of sex addiction. Recovery for sex addicts is about monotony (one partner, one reason, fewer variations)
