Document Summary
Psycho active drug- it changes how you feel and how you behave. Yet, despite similarities to drugs, it has escaped other stereotypes that others have gotten. Alcohol- most dangerous drug that we consume. This special status is not natural - in other contexts, alcohol conceived differently. Clear reminder that the meaning and status of substances are socially constructed. Alcohol, and its use, play important role in how individuals construct and perform identity. We use substances in part to create identity and to make identity and to communicate them to other people. How we drink locates us in terms of identity. Drinking is performative- it communicates messages to others. Example; if a guy walks up to a bar and orders girly drinks, people find that strange or unusual (noticeable) Professional aspect- drinking and work and how they go together. Read by others- styles of drinking, drinks of choice, drinking locations- all communicate personal characteristics.
