Describe interventions used to address loneliness and improve social connection. Humans have an innate need to belong, to feel connected, and to be valued by others. Allows us to have social support, which helps us with life transitions. Loneliness is the most common outcome of low social connectedness. Can lead to depression, suicide ideation and behaviour. Observational in nature; looked at family ties and ties within the broader community. Inds with better social networks had better health/mh. Resistance to disease, less disability and chronic diseases. Social connections offset the effects of poverty. Higher education and income, married, older, high functional status all predictors of better physical and mental health. People are surrounded by supportive others who move with them throughout the life course. Personal factors - age, gender, general demographics. Situational factors - life events, changing role demands, etc.
