Social support: life transitions in old age, tangible social support: getting money from someone because you need to cover your bills, non-tangible social support: emotional support, outlet to vent to, retirement, getting a chronic disease, widowhood, etc. Early observational research: looking at one"s family ties and then their ties within the broader community - closer ties with family and community had early health. Focused on physical health: resistance to disease, fewer incidents to disabilities, chronic diseases, mental health - connections around times of troubles, e. g. poverty - even someone had connections with their family and the broader community, they did ok. Large epidemiological studies: higher education, income, marital status, age, older adult, but married - protected you against the feeling of loneliness and functional status was higher, functional status. Largely atheoretical: do these observation studies, surveys but there isn"t a theory to plant on the research area.
