Income inequality and health: inequalities that exist between countries / regions / province. Role of welfare states: different levels of social goods e. g. de-commodification, education, health services, housing benefits. How can we explain the differences in life expectancies between the oecd countries? (fig. It"s not money but the distribution of the money you have. Individual"s health tends to improve with with increase in their income and prestige. There is better health in population groups with high average income. Showed a chart with life expectancy vs income inequality. There is a trend and tendency - higher inequality the lower life expectancy. But there are odd cases of countries that disprove that. Why might income distribution be related to population health ( table 8. 2) Natural selection - survival of the fittest. All healthy people from poor country went to a rich country and all the unhealthy people went/stay to a poorer country. Social awards to good behaviour in compared to other areas.
