HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Basolateral Amygdala, Cerebral Cortex, Globus Pallidus
Document Summary
The lobes of the cerebral cortex often have unique functions. Frontal lobe: association cortex, intellect, premotor cortex, includes frontal eye eld, responsible for moving eyes. 2 areas located for speech: wernicke"s area (dictionary, extracting info from hearing to form words and meanings, broca"s area, connection between dictionary to motor area to form speech. Sensorimotor organization of the precentral and postcentral gyri. Deep nuclei: located in two systems wrapped around ventricles, limbic system, basal nuclei. Limbic system: around inside of ventricles, amygdala, hippocampus, fornix, mammillary bodies, wrapped around inferior horn of lateral ventricles, wraps around superior horn and drops down on either side of thalamus. Basal nuclei: around outside of ventricles, caudate, lentiform nuclei, lentiform nuclei consist of globes pallidus and putamen, caudate and lentiform nuclei together known as corpus striatum. Mechanism of limbic system: thalamus/auditory cortex/visual cortex > basolateral amygdala > central amygdala > central grey area of midbrain > pons > spinal cord.
