Although you are usually a staff nurse on orthop dics, you are doing a friend a favour by working a 12-hour day shift at the emergency department at the hamilton. At 11:00 am, a 73 year-old woman accompanied by her daughter is brought by ambulance to emergency. As you approach her, she is lying on the gurney on her back and is in severe pain. She was made more comfortable for the ambulance ride by immobilizing her right lower limb with pillows and sandbags, and by bandages that held her two legs together. Her daughter explains that she was working in the study when she heard a loud thud; she rushed to the kitchen to find her mother lying on the floor. Her right lower limb immediately attracted your attention because it was laterally rotated and noticeably shorter than her left lower limb. You notice that the patient is a frail, elderly woman in rather poor nutritional state.
