Document Summary

This is a summary of the processes that occur from digestion to storage or use of components from that process. Tissues may be specialized for either a storage function (adipose tissue), anabolism (eg liver), or waste removal (eg kidney) Nutrients must be circulated to reach these sites. Dietary components we take in (cid:0) macronutrients that supply energy (cid:0) vitamins and minerals for cofactors (cid:0) water for environment for reactions (cid:0) zenobiotics (toxins, drugs not food) Hormones, nutrients, waste products are transported through the body by the circulatory system. Products of digestion go to the liver (water-soluble) or into the blood (through the lymphatic system if fat-soluble) Catabolism produces co2, which must be removed. Breakdown of proteins produces nitrogen which must disposed of. Water may be excreted to maintain body temperature. The respiratory system disposes of co2 (cid:0) nitrogen then goes to the liver (cid:0) urinary system. Unabsorbed foods are excreted from the gi tract.
