Document Summary

As fetal matter accumulates in the sigmoid rectum, it causes the rectal wall to distend. Furthermore, due to the signal, at the level of the spinal cord there will be a reflex, which sends motor information to the sigmoid rectum and the rectum to cause muscle to contract. At the same time, it sends inhibitory signals to the anal sphincter to allow the fecal matter through. There is also an outer voluntary anal sphincter for voluntary control. Since this is the enteric nervous system, the signal causing the muscle to contract will be through the parasympathetic system. The liver has a right lobe and left lobe. Separating the lobes is the falciform ligament, the double fold of peritoneum which helps to suspend the liver from the inferior surface of the diaphragm. Furthermore, it allows the liver to be connected to the anterior abdominal wall (it is the only organ that is attached to the anterior abdominal wall).
