HTHSCI 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Amide, Midazolam
Document Summary
Note: from here onward, this lecture series pertains to drugs for the central nervous system. Local anesthesia refers to a loss of sensation to a specific area of the body without the loss of consciousness. Cellular mechanism of action: blocks sodium channels, thus inhibiting the influx of sodium into cells necessary to fire and conduct an action potential, thereby inhibiting the nerve impulse to the brain. Blocking sodium channels is non-specific process, both sensory (sensation) and motor (muscle activity) impulses will be affected. This is in contrast to analgesics, which only blocks pain and not all nervous function. : in the past, parents were requesting emla (eutectic mixture of local. Anesthetics) for their children receiving vaccinations to induce a local analgesic effect. However, it was later found that this was constricting blood flow to the area of the vaccine. Thus, the vaccine was being poorly distributed and was having less efficacy.
