All things that live require air and clean water: whenever we talk about the environment, that is where our concern is. Difficult to draw lines between the environment and how it impacts our health. Research estimates that the effects of water and sanitation account for 4% of the global mortality. Who 2% of cancers due to air pollution; 5% due to occupational exposures. Because there is still so much that science does not know: unexplained coincidences and connections. Associations vs. causation: relationships vs. direct cause and effect, causation means a direct cause. Association: relationship between 2 random variables (statistically significant), without understanding the direction of the relationship. Ex: ice cream and crime: mostly what we deal with. Very rare to show actual causation: doesn"t necessarily mean that one thing causes the other just means that in some studies we are able to show they are associated.
