Wampum"s: wampum are tiny beads made from shells the older the shells, the more deeply purple they become, confederacy belt (hiawatha) 5 nations that form the haudenosaunee confederacy. Onondaga people are represented in the center tree viewed as the neutral party, facilitating discussion with the other nations. Roots of peace from the tree are extending beyond the 5 nations to any nation who wants to join the confederacy: friendship belt (covenant chain) Taken up by british crown and they adopted it. Chain signifies the alliance if english are in need (american revolution) that they will pull on the chain and the haudenosaunee will come to help: wing /dust fan. The tree is always growing, to expand and provide shelter/peace over many nations. Brought out over band council meetings to dust away bad feelings/thoughts so decisions can be made with a good mind.
