Yes, it can be alive and not reproduce. 5 main divisions of life that we know of. Often form very tough colonies can achieve huge sizes. Autotrophic; capture the energy of the sun and covert it to food. Bacteria however, can do both (can use inorganic material and organic material to create energy) Small animals may be the size of 40 microns. Prokaryotes do not have a membrane bound nucleus. Difficult in defining life is not surprise as we see continuum between non-alive and live things (both currently and historically) Excitingly this implies diff types of life are possible. It also implies that we need not worry about fitting al phenomena into one or the other category but allow research to uncover a rich diversity of solutions for living.
