"" This article focuses on how arabidopsis thaliana - our model plant organism - interacts with aphids. The insects that feed on plants can be categorized as those that chew plant biomass and those that pierce the plant and suck out nutrients. They used a specialized organ known as a stylet to pierce the epidermis of the plant and extract phloem sap from the interior. This insertion is mostly intercellular to minimize damage to the plant, preventing any facultative defense response. The main damage to arabidopsis from aphid feeding is not due to the physical trauma but due to the fact that aphids are vectors for many viral plant diseases. The green peach aphid (gpa) is considered to be a generalist because it feeds on a wide variety of plant species rather than restricting itself to a signal family.
