Document Summary

1 neuron system cell body in cns in either motor nuclei of cranial nerves. Or anterior horn of spinal cord axon travels directly to target tissue only excitatory always myelinated. Enervates cardiac/smooth muscle and glands perceive visceral sensations in body. 2 neuron system preganglionic neuron"s cell bodies in brainstem or lateral horn of spinal cord and postganglionic neuron postganglionic neuron goes to target tissue always unmyelinated, releases neurotransmitter excitatory or inhibitory. Somatic: cell bodies in anterior horn, exit through ventral root into spinal nerve to skeletal muscle. Autonomic: cell bodies in lateral grey horn in brainstem, ventral root, spinal nerve. Because of location of cell bodies of neurons within cns; originate in lateral horns of spinal cord in t1-l2. Neurons ventral root spinal cord join in spinal nerve enter sympathetic ganglia. Sympathetic chain ganglia: collection of postganglionic cell bodies, close to spinal cord, connect to form 2 chains on either side of spinal cord.
