Cholesterol: a modified steroid with fat stuck on. Triglyceride: a glycerol molecule with 3 fatty acids. Phospholipids: has a hydrophobic end and hydrophilic end. A precursor for creating many hormones: also a precursor for vitamin production. Used to keep cell membranes fluid: allows for fluidity. Skin waterproofing mechanism: stops water from getting absorbed easily. Statins: a group of drugs that lower cholesterol levels. Transports fat and cholesterol: chylomicron, very low density. 1 glycerol + 3 fatty acids: a fatty substance. When extra energy is needed: the triglycerides are hydrolyzed, transported in the plasma by albumin. Total cholesterol and chd risk: decreased total cholesterol decreased risk, dose response relationship. Hdl and chd risk: higher levels of hdl decreased risk, women require a higher level of hdl to protect them. Increased ldl to hdl ratio increased risk. High risk 20: prescribe medication and lifestyle changes.
