Document Summary

Olfaction picture (picture of the nose- medial view) When air comes in from our external environment, it enters through the nostrils (or nares) and it enters into both the right and left nasal cavities and hits the ridges. Ridges: found on the lateral side of the nasal cavity, swirls the air and delivers the odorants to the olfactory region. Odorants are chemicals that bind to chemoreceptors in the olfactory region. Olfaction picture (close up of the olfactory region) olfactory region is divided into layers: olfactory epithelial layer. Has 3 types of cells in it. Basal cells: responsible for regenerating the entire layer as it gets damaged from the external environment. Olfactory neuron (specialized, bipolar neuron cell: dendrite region is rounded. This area is aka the olfactory vesicle: olfactory vesicle. Have olfactory hairs (aka cilia) on it. Chemoreceptors are located on the cilia: other end of the olfactory neuron moves through. Ct helps hold epithelial cells onto the cribriform plate.
