KINESIOL 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Nucleus Accumbens, Morphine, Reward System
Document Summary
Every time we bite into a lemon we associate the site of the lemon with the sour taste. Sight of the lemon causes you to salivate which causes the sourness to decrease. We see lemons and our bodies have the physiological response to help minimize the sour taste. Our body has a prepared response to minimize the impact of the sourness whereas children eating it for the first time have no learned association so they have no preparatory response. Mental illness / low income housing / parents who have addiction more likely to grow up to be addicts. Addiction is a very complex case to understand from a scientific perspective. Psychosocial disease as well not juts biological disease. Drug addiction changes the brain in 3 profound ways: reduced dopamine receptors in the reward system, reduced activation of the frontal cortex, activation of the rewad system in anticipation of the drug.
