Shape of cells: a) squamous flat + scale like, b) cuboidal, equal in height and width, c) columnar taller than wide. Functional characteristics: a) simple, allows diffusion of gases, filtration of blood + secretion + absorption, they don"t have to pass through more than one layer, b) stratified, provides protection, especially against abrasion. Skin: c) pseudostratified, modification of simple, secrete and moving muceous, d) squamous, allows for diffusion or acts as a filter, combination of simple and squamous provides the least barrier for filter + diffusion, ex. Found in areas where we need to easily move things: e) cuboidal/ columnar, in areas where secretion / absorption occurs, could include goblet cells that produce + serete mucus.
