Continuing embryology: main focus, take genetic material of male sex cells (sperm, combine with the genetic material from the female gamete cells (oocyte) Sperm"s journey: vagina cervix uterus ampulla. Sperm move with flagella: once in uterus, uterine contractions in muscular walls help move them towards oocyte. Contractions can be caused from: oxytocin, released during intercourse, prostaglandins, found in the semen, with each monthly menstrual cycle, female will release one oocyte, oocyte will get released fourteen days after the onset of the menstrual cycle. If intercourse occurs during this time, the sperm can come in contact with the oocyte: the oocyte can be fertilized, oocyte only stays viable for 24 hours. 3: the plasma membrane becomes smaller and it pulls away from zona pellucida the zona pellucida will denature, zp3 becomes inactivated. Day 5: cells forming a solid ball start to fill a fluid filled cavity, no longer solid structure.
