KINESIOL 2YY3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Sexual Reproduction, Spermatogonium, Prostatic Urethra
Document Summary
L23: end of urinary system / male reproductive. ~20 cm long: layers: mucosa (inner) and muscularis (outside) Place where the urethra connects to the tubules producing the male reproductive cells. Secretions containing sperm, sperm motility and viability factors and substances that neutralize the ph of the urethra. Transitional epithelium becomes columnar (specifically, stratified columnar or pseudostratified columnar) External sphincter is a little but of muscle surrounding the intermediate urethra. The semen pass through all segments of the urethra to the outside. Starts out as stratified columnar or pseudostratified columnar becomes stratified squamous near the exterior (think about openings to the body) Skeletal muscle surrounding the intermediate urethra forms external urethral sphincter. Length of 4 cm - orifice between clitoris and vagina. Transitional changing to stratified columnar or pseudostratified columnar then stratified squamous epithelium near orifice (same changes seen in male) Circular smooth muscle (muscularis layer, similar to male) Sexual reproduction necessary for survival of the species.
