Document Summary

Present when the penis isn"t even born yet. Contain all the chromosomes so they are not seen as foreign by the body. Spermiogenesis = maturation of spermatids into sperm cells. Spermiation the release of sperm cell from a sertoli (sustentacular) cell. The sertoli cell produces some fluid, this fluid moves the cell to the lumen. Regulates sperm production and maturation in the testes. When sperm production is sufficient (there is enough stored) sertoli cells release inhibin indirectly reduces testosterone (through a series of other steps) decreases sperm production. Sperm production is proceeding too slowly less inhibin is released by the sertoli cells indirectly increasing testosterone sperm production will be increased. Adapted for reaching & penetrating a secondary oocyte. Contains digestive enzymes inside it to break down the zona pellucida during fertilization. The middle part of the tail contains majority of the mitochondria. A lot of mitochondria needed for sperm to propel itself.
