Document Summary

Understand body in relation to the environment surrounding them. Must master gravitational forces to be able to walk properly. Postural reflexes facilitate posture maintenance in a changing environment: maintain head in an upright position (breathing) Must be able to hold head upright position to hold rest of body up and breathe: aid in development of mobility (eg. righting and rolling, help to develop equilibrium while in motion (eg. parachute) Postural reflexes typically disappear after 2 months (a bit later than primitive reflexes) They are typically sequential (ie. derotatrive righting must occurring before rolling) Initially similar to primate reflexes, then incorporated into general repertoire of movements. Primitive reflexes happen all at once within a time frame postural are more hierarchal, happen in a predetermined order eg. can"t roll learn to right yourself. Leads to a point where it isn"t reflexive and can do it voluntarily. Eventually learn to execute in the absence of stimulus.
