Lecture 1 (learning objectives are good short answer questions) In 2012, more than 66,000 canadians died from heart disease or stroke: one person every 7 minutes. One mi occurs every 13 minutes in canada. Heart disease and stroke costs canada 20. 9 billion every year in physician services, hospital costs, lost wages and decreased productivity. Second leading cause of death (first in cancer) Cvd = diseases of heart and blood vessels (6 categories: ischemic heart disease, cerebrovacular disease, peripheral vascular disease, heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease. Many different definitions and conditions for the same disease. Ihd reduction of blood to the heart muscle: most common type of cvd causing death. Longitudinal (and prospective) studies help with understanding risk and protective factors: timing, strength, consistency, correlation does not equal causation, experimental studies (in vivo humans, rodents) help provide mechanisms associations. Case control and retrospective studies (take people that have cvd and ask about childhood (stress, diet etc. ))
