October 12, 2016: this is different then the spinal nerves. Numbered from anterior portion of brain to posterior: reversed in cranial nerve xi and xii. Sensory component carries action potentials from receptors in the head and thorax. Motor component of a cranial nerve carries action potentials that stimulate effects. They originate in the brain and are useful in provided information that helps to localize brain injuries. Nerves that arise in the brain are opposed to spinal cord (exceptions is xi: accessory nerve, some nerve roots from brainstem and some from spinal cord. One pair from the spinal cord (xi) Can be sensory, motor or both: can carry sensory info from general senses. I. e. temperature, pressure etc: specialized senses as well. Depending on nerve can vary in function. Turns light info into electrical impulses sent along optic nerve: exits at back of eye. 2 structures join together at optic chiasm.
