Document Summary

Fertilization: defined as the merging of genetic info from sperm and 2nd oocyte, occurs 12-24 hours after ovulation, when ovaries inject second oocyte. Sperm binding: zp3 receptors in zona bind with the molecular structures in head of sperm (lock and key) Acrosome reaction: acrosomal enzymes leave head of sperm and digest glycoprotein layer on zona, which makes a pathway for the sperm to get through. Cortical reaction: when the sperm gets through zona, triggers depolarization to repel other sperm, called fast block sperming. Cortical granules from the oocyte then eat the glycoprotein and turn the zona hard. Genetic transfer: plasma membranes of sperm and egg fuse together to allow genetic info from sperm to enter egg. When the two merge together (syngamy), the diploid zygote is formed. 9/18/2016 11:27:00 pm: zygote formed from sperm + egg, needs to divide into multiple cells. No time for growth, so only splitting: cleavage: process of splitting without growth.
