CHAPTER 13: BRAIN AND CRANIAL NERVES

* white matter = bundles of myelinated axons
*grey matter = cell bodies, decision making, synapsis
Brain: Gross Anatomy
Brain
- Part of CNS contained in cranial cavity
Brainstem: connects spinal cord to brain; integration of reflexes necessary for survival
-lots of white matter
-sends signals up (sensory) and down (motor)
-reflexes: breathing, heart rate, digestion
Cerebellum: involved in control of locomotion, balance, posture
-posterior to brain stem
-10% mass of brain, contains 50% of neurons
-coordinates skeletal movements (walking etc) tells muscles ‘how much to move”
from information so we can coordinate muscles
Diencephalon: on top of brainstem. 4 regions
-thalamus: main relay station for sensory (grey matter)
-subthalamus,
-epithalamus,
-hypothalamus: endocrine and nervous systems, controls pituitary, controls hunger
and thirst, moods and emotions, sex drive, body temperature, day and night cycles
Cerebrum: conscious thought, control
