KINESIOL 1YY3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Superior Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle, Antrum, Mechanoreceptor
Document Summary
Voluntary phase is named this because we have control over it. As we chew food it mixes with saliva and produces bolus forces the bolus of food posterior into the oral cavity which initiates the swallowing process. Using your tongue we press the bolus against the hard and soft palate which. Bolus enters the oropharynx tactile receptors send action potentials to the medulla oblongata specifically to the swallowing center, then action potentials are sent back down through motor neurons for some response. Soft palate is being elevated to block access to the nasopharynx. The larynx and pharynx move superiorly to receive the bolus. The superior / middle / inferior pharyngeal constrictors - these muscles contract to force the bolus of food to the esophagus. Superior pharyngeal constrictor - helps close off the nasopharynx. Middle pharyngeal constrictor - pushes the bolus of food inferiorly. Bolus continues to move inferiorly - passes over epiglottis forcing it closed.
