In all these cases the complementizer (comp) is outside the sentence. That clauses function as np"s and take their place in the tree diagram as cp (s-bar in textbook) Indirect questions introduced by if and whether behave same. Adverbials are adjuncts (etc. ) and behave like adverbial phrases and pp"s. The complementizer (comp) is a question word which replaces a word or phrase in the deep structure. At surface level the question word is moved from its position in the deep structure to the comp. Indirect questions function as np"s and take their place in the tree diagram as cp (s-bar in textbook) position: surface: what do i know, deep: i know what. If part of np, the whole np will move with it. If part of pp, the whole pp will move or just the question word. Relative clauses function as modifiers of np (e. g. are adjectival, hence are attached to n-bar)
