Lecture 5 - Craft Unions Conservative Aspects • “Only the Skilled Workman” • Skilled workman lost power they had before, aren’t in charge anymore • Trying to conserve the status and power they had • Trying to keep a lot of traditions and customs they had Radical Aspects • Going right the fundamentals • Trying to keep control of how things are made and how things are done in the workplace • Foreman come along, they don’t have a lot of skill, but manage all the workers. Craftsmen fight the foreman often because they want to maintain the workplace as it was before • Mutual support • Examples: Carpenters Union and Building Trades (carpenters as well) Classic Example: Shoemakers • Called the “Knights of St. Crispin” • Very strong on the early customs • Band together very quickly in the skilled
