LABR ST 1C03 February 26 , 2013 Race and Capitalism **Key Terms: Structural Racism, Interpersonal Racism, Internalized Racism, Whiteness Slavery, Colonialism and Race: - Slavery predates the colonial system - Slavery and indentured servitude initially were not racialized - Colonial projects necessitated the development of racial hierarchies (unique to capitalism) - Race is a social construct The Invention of Race: - Multiple efforts to justify racial difference were rooted emerging sciences - Racial classifications by pseudoscience’s popularized and entrenched racist beliefs - The social construction of race within colonialism served to further justify colonial expansion The Making of Whiteness: - Whiteness is a social construction that is fluid - Initially all non-Anglo Saxons were not seen as white (Irish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, etc) - Whiteness is not just an absence of racial oppression – but an identity and practice of power in the context of capitalist w
